Day One: Throw Back the Covers

The very first task to add into your new daily routine is to throw back the covers. Note, our first task is not to make your bed.

The average person will sweat up to 1L (~32 oz) each night 1, and those with hyperhidrosis can be double that. The sweat will go into the sheets, bedding, pillows and any feather beds and mattress protectors - as well as mattresses.

Making your bed under these conditions locks in the moisture which can result in increased odour, dampness, and in rare occasions, mildew of the bedding. Fresh air is great to relieve such things, and by exposing your bedding to it, these bedtime maladies will not be an issue

Throwing back the covers will extend the life of all bedding garments, but especially your mattress.

How to throw back your covers for easy making later.

  • Straighten your fitted sheet and mattress protectors if necessary.
  • Pull your top sheet flat on the mattress like you're going to make the bed.
  • Pull your main blanket, comforter or duvet up over the flat sheet, again, like you're going to make your bed.
  • Put any additional blankets or bedding FLAT on top of the duvet.
  • Grab all layers by the corners and fold back over the bed, toward the foot, in half. You can go slightly more than half if your bed will allow for such.
  • Stack your sleeping pillow(s) on top of the mattress where your head would lay.
  • Do not add any additional or ornamental pillows at this point.
